What is Yeoville Studio?
Yeoville Studio, is a partnership between the Wits School of Architecture and Planning and the Yeoville Stakeholder Forum (YSF), its supporting organisation Yeoville Bellevue Community Development Trust (YBCDT), and the French Institute in South Africa (IFAS). The studio is located within the Wits School of Architecture and Planning – under the auspices of the Centre for Urbanism and Built Environment Studies (CUBES). Yeoville Studio has been running since October 2009. It was launched in Yeoville on the 28 February 2010, with a series of workshops around four major themes:
- Urban Stories
- African Diversity
- Public Space
- Housing
The objective of Yeoville Studio is to work closely with organisations in Yeoville to produce relevant and locally-adapted research; and to disseminate findings to Yeoville residents in a way that enables them to use it for advocacy and sustainable development. The project also entails training Architecture and Planning students to work with communities and to locate their professional practice in real-life situations.
A participatory approach capturing Yeoville stories
Overall, the objective of the Yeoville studio is to encourage both residents and future planners to think about the following:
- What does it means to live in Yeoville?
- How could residents have more say in their environment?
- What are local issues that matter to people?
- How can we think creatively together about possible responses to these issues?
In this process of interaction, Yeoville Studio captures many urban stories, memories, perceptions, fears, dreams and imaginations and has its place in the Hotel Yeoville Project.
