I have very fond memories of Yeoville. I was brought up in Hillbrow, but went to Junior School at Berrnard Patley in Yeoville. Most of my friends resided here, and I spent the next 30 years of my life in its environs.
I won my first swimming certificate at Yeoville pool. I came third in a backstroke race - there were only three swimmers. One of my best friends lived in the house that became the Yeoville Police Station. On my birthday, I stood in some shit in the garden, and ran home to Hillbrow crying. At every level, I loved Yeoville and still do, from Feigels delicatessen's cheese blintzes to the Piccadily bioscope and Mamas cafe which later became a restaurant, later the nightlife - Clousseaus, Tortue, Coffee Society, The Harbour Cafe, and my home away from home, Rumours.Yeoville still nourishes me, and I visit when possible to imbibe the new cosmopolitan energy, and the diverse range of restaurants that now inhabit the street that I so loved, and that still evokes my fondest memories - Rockey Street.
