ORANGE JOBURG
When people talk or sing about sadness they sing or talk about the blues. For me joburg is the opposite of blue - it's joy, and home, and parents, and friends, and 53 years of being alive and in love - especially with the city.
So for me joburg is orange. It's sometimes purple when jacarandas are in bloom. And it's sometimes a threatening grey when ominous clouds gather before a big storm. Sometimes its pink, before the sun goes down, or an irridescent yellow - when the sun angles low on the dry veld or when it's a monkeyu's wedding. In winter it's brown. Sometimes its messy - the green of woolies packets drifting about along black roads. red and white coke tins littering the gutters, newsprint blowing in the wind, the bones of old smileys lying in the streets. But most of the time it's orange, The opposite of blue. The colour of happiness and bright light.
