The Directory

To search the directory for specific listings or topics, please use the Search Box at the top of this website.

The Yeoville Community Directory can be downloaded here. This  directory was compiled through the participation of the many people who engaged with the Hotel Yeoville project while it was active and running in the library through 2010. The directory provides a list of contacts and information on useful services in the Yeoville area, as well as the larger Johannesburg area. This information was current and correct up to the end of 2011. Apologies if since then things have changed. This website is now an archive.

Hotel Yeoville was a participatory public art project. It was based online and in the public library of Yeoville on the eastern edge of Johannesburg’s inner city. It attempted – through the capillary medium of digital interactivity – to sculpt social spaces, both actual and virtual, in which people in the pan-African suburb of Yeoville felt safe and welcome to narrate their experiences of nationality, geography, foreignness, difference and what constitutes a sense of being at home. If there is anything you would like to know about the virtual or physical project Hotel Yeoville, please email : Even though this website is now largely  an archive of a project that was, we are still happy to  hear from you!

The Book

Hotel Yeoville, a collection of essays, photographs and other texts represents and extends what began as an interactive art project and evolved into a multiplatform archive of urban life. The book presents new critical perspectives on contemporary artistic research and practice, and documents the complex set of negotiations – between artists, residents, consultants and audience – that brought the work into being.
